The Transportation Logistics 4.0 Maturity Benchmark tool is part of a joint research project with Germany’s largest technical university to study the requirements of digitization in the logistics industry.
FORT WASHINGTON, Pa.—The Transportation Logistics 4.0 Maturity Benchmark tool, part of a collaborative research project between Germany’s RWTH Aachen University and the Transporeon Group, is now available. This free online tool enables manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and other shippers to determine their current levels of digitization while providing recommendations to prepare companies for anticipated future challenges in the coming age of smart logistics.
The tool presents 38 survey questions regarding shippers’ current logistics practices in road transportation. The results of the survey provide an overall Transportation Logistics 4.0 score along with a graphical analysis based on eight categories of digitalization. Results can be compared to those of similar-sized companies in similar industries or regions, enabling each respondent to identify logistics and transportation processes with potential for improvement.
“Responses are analyzed across a variety of dimensions relevant to Transportation Logistics 4.0 adoption, such as the shipper’s ability to cooperate with customers and to automate processes,” says Peter Förster, Managing Director of the Transporeon Group. “Translating results from the maturity benchmark tool into tangible steps can ultimately facilitate long-term competitive advantage for shippers looking to digitize their transportation processes for the next generation.”
The term Transportation Logistics 4.0 is a deliberate reference to the more widely cited Industry 4.0, which asserts that automation and data exchange are the next developmental stage after mechanization, mass production and computerization.
“This new tool has been developed by our university’s Cybernetics Lab team and Transporeon to help shippers answer key questions,” says the Chair for Information Management in Mechanical Engineering, Professor Sabina Jeschke, Ph.D., of RWTH Aachen University. “What are the requirements for digitally networked logistics? Are companies ready for such developments, for ‘smart logistics’ or Transportation Logistics 4.0? What do companies need to do now in order to be ready for the challenges of the future?”
The goal of the global study, which began in Europe in March 2016, is to gauge the effects of connected processes and information technology on real-world logistics. Results collected by the benchmark tool will be used by RWTH Aachen University to analyze the status and requirements of digitization in transportation logistics and provide information to help accelerate the digitization of processes worldwide between shippers and transportation service providers, 3PLs, freight forwarders, brokers, drivers and other carriers.
